Rhodes City Tour

Rhodes City, the capital of Rhodes Island, was founded 2,400 years ago. The city seems to transcend time barriers as historical sites from each era exist alongside a backdrop of this modern cosmopolitan Greek town. Our tour begins with an exploration of the ancient Acropolis of Rhodes, situated high on the summit of “Monte Smith” Hill, where remnants of the Temple of Apollo and the restored edifices of the Ancient Stadium and Odium dominate the hillside.

Only a few minutes from the Acropolis we will enter yet another historical site : the high walls, deep moats, and narrow cobbled streets that make up the medieval town of the Knights Hospitaller. Byzantine churches, Gothic Palaces, Inns and Hospitals, and Mosques co-exist in a traditional Greek setting seemingly unphased by hectic modern lifestyles.

The most impressive building within the city walls is the “Grand Masters’ Palace, a beautifully restored structure housing a superb collection of original mosaics from Kos dating back to the late Hellenistic and early Byzantine periods. You cannot fail to be impressed by the eclectic mix of cultures and atmospheres so obviously present in this fascinating town.
